Östliche Karwendelspitze, Mountain summit at Karwendel range, Germany and Austria
Östliche Karwendelspitze is a mountain summit at 2538 meters on the Bavaria-Tyrol border within the Northern Limestone Alps. The peak features limestone rock faces and a broad ridge that can be approached from multiple directions.
The first recorded climb took place in 1870 when an alpinist established a route through the limestone formation. Multiple paths to the summit have developed since then.
The mountain draws climbers from across the Alps and has become part of the regional mountaineering traditions. The routes and markers on the ridge show how many people have walked these slopes over the decades.
The climb takes about two and a half hours from Karwendelhaus mountain hut and follows grassy ridges with some easy climbing sections. The route is easy to spot on clear days and most climbers complete it without specialized equipment.
The descent through Grabenkar cirque is much faster than the climb because you can slide down loose stone and scree. However, this path can be tiring on the way down since loose rock shifts under your feet.
