Breitgrieskarspitze

Breitgrieskarspitze is a mountain summit in the Karwendel range that rises to 2590 meters with limestone cliffs and steep rock walls dropping into the Neunerkar cirque. The peak sits within a network of hiking trails that connect to nearby mountain huts and neighboring summits.

Hermann von Barth made the first recorded ascent on August 14, 1870, which marked the beginning of mountaineering on this peak. The mountain was subsequently developed and integrated into the modern hiking network of the Karwendel region.

The mountain stands within Alpenpark Karwendel, where traditional Alpine preservation methods maintain the natural environment through specific regulations and restricted access.

The summit is reached via the Toni Gaugg Höhenweg trail starting from either Pleisenhütte or Karwendelhaus, requiring approximately four hours for the round trip. The route follows mountain paths that can become treacherous in bad weather, so good conditions and appropriate gear are necessary.

At the Breitgrieskarscharte at 2388 meters sits an improvised emergency shelter made from a converted mountain rescue vehicle cabin. Many hikers overlook this unexpected refuge, yet it can be a lifesaver when weather suddenly turns dangerous.
