Altes Rathaus

The Altes Rathaus is an administrative building with Italian Baroque features located at the Alter Markt in Potsdam. Its facade displays eight Corinthian pilasters and precise stonework, while inside, renovated halls now serve as exhibition spaces for the city's history and art collections.

Built between 1753 and 1755 on Frederick the Great's orders, this was the fourth town hall structure on the site. It replaced medieval predecessor buildings and represented a new approach to urban planning under Prussian rule.

The building has long served as the civic center where locals and visitors gather, marking the importance of this square in city life. Today it houses exhibitions that explore the region's past and artistic heritage, showing how Potsdam developed over time.

The building is easy to reach on foot from Potsdam's city center via the Alter Markt. Access is level and barrier-free, and you can explore the exhibitions at your own pace.

The building connects to the neighboring Knobelsdorff-Haus through modern glass bridges, seamlessly linking two historic structures. This contemporary addition lets visitors move between the two houses while keeping the original facades intact.
