Fahrradmuseum Barrien

The Fahrradmuseum Barrien displays around 70 bicycles from different decades, from early high-wheel models with rubber tires to modern racing machines. The collection presents the technical and construction development of bicycles in a clear permanent exhibition.

The museum preserves a high-wheel bicycle from 1876 with solid rubber tires, one of the earliest bicycle models in transportation history. These pieces document how the bicycle gradually developed into a reliable and affordable means of transportation for many people.

The collection shows how the bicycle evolved from a luxury item into everyday transportation for ordinary people. Visitors can see which materials and designs were popular in different eras and how these preferences shaped cycling culture.

The museum is open five days a week and is easily reachable from Syke by public transport. Saturday visits can be arranged by appointment, making it worth contacting ahead for group tours.

A special piece is an Optima bicycle from around 1900 that featured an extended rear axle to make mounting easier. This unusual design shows creative solutions from a time when people were still experimenting with how to make bicycles more user-friendly.
