Wohn- und Wirtschaftsgebäude Syker Straße 19

The residential and commercial building at Syker Strasse 19 is a substantial structure with multiple floors that combined living and business spaces. The ground floor was designed for trade activities while upper levels housed residential quarters.

Matthias Hartmann, serving as bailiff of the Heiligenfelde parish, purchased the land between 1768 and 1771 and had this building constructed. His descendant Johann Philipp Hartmann later opened the first coffee house in Syke within its walls in 1801.

The building served as a social hub when a coffee house opened inside in the early 1800s. This function shows how the structure brought townspeople together for daily gatherings beyond just commerce and housing.

The building contains numerous rooms including a hall and entrance area that supported its varied uses over time. It stands today as a protected heritage structure representing an important part of the town's development.

Carl Balk, who bought the building in 1828, operated horse stables for mail transport and generated substantial income from postal services. This mix of local enterprises shows how a single house became a hub for early communication networks.
