Burg Syke

Burg Syke is a castle complex in Syke with a horseshoe-shaped ring wall that still stands alongside administrative buildings. Several structures from different periods since the 16th century surround the medieval courtyard.

The castle was founded around 1270 by the Counts of Neubruchhausen as a regional fortification. It passed between different noble houses over centuries before reaching its current form.

The castle courtyard is used by visitors to view the surviving buildings such as the gatehouse. Its original role as a defensive stronghold remains visible in how the structures are arranged around the inner space.

The courtyard can be visited to see surviving buildings like the gatehouse from the 18th century. Keep in mind that some areas are still used by government offices, so certain sections should be respected.

A copper engraving by Merian from 1654 shows the site with double moats and several buildings that no longer exist today. This historic image helps visitors imagine the original extent of the fortification.
