Staustufe Wintrich, Lock and barrage in Wintrich, Germany
Staustufe Wintrich is a lock and barrage complex on the Moselle River that manages water flow and enables navigation for commercial vessels. The facility combines a lock chamber, dam structure, and power generation infrastructure in a single installation.
The facility was built between 1956 and 1963 as part of a major effort to improve navigation infrastructure on the Moselle River. This project made commercial shipping safer and more reliable for cargo transport on the waterway.
The barrage serves as the eighth of twelve water control points on the main 242-kilometer stretch between Koblenz and Apach.
The lock is designed to handle large cargo vessels of varying sizes that operate on this river route. You can watch the locking process from nearby viewpoints, as each passage takes time and offers interesting observation opportunities.
The power station uses specialized Kaplan turbines to generate electricity from the water flow, supplying power to tens of thousands of homes in the region. This system shows how hydroelectric power and navigation can work together on a single structure.
