Anstaltskirche Sonnenstein

Anstaltskirche Sonnenstein is a sandstone church building constructed in the early 1900s with a central nave and two side aisles. The interior displays Art Nouveau paintings, original furnishings including a baptismal font and altar, along with an organ from earlier periods.

Built in the early 1900s, this church replaced an earlier chapel from 1817 that had served the psychiatric hospital complex. The building's survival is linked to its use as storage during the post-war period until 1991, which protected it from demolition.

The church took its name from its role serving the psychiatric facility on the grounds. Visitors can still see the valuable furnishings and artwork that reflect the spiritual care once offered to patients here.

The church is accessible as part of visiting the Sonnenstein complex and can be viewed during designated visiting times. The location on the grounds makes it easy to include in a broader tour of the historic psychiatric hospital site.

The walls are built from different types of sandstone that have developed distinct colors and textures through decades of natural weathering. These color variations tell a subtle story of how the building has aged and changed over time.
