Staustufe Detzem, Hydroelectric barrage in Detzem, Germany.
The Staustufe Detzem is a barrage on the Moselle River that controls water levels and creates a reservoir extending about 29 kilometers upstream. The facility includes locks for boat traffic and a hydroelectric power station.
The barrage was built in 1964 as part of the Mosel-Saar-Lahn waterway system to improve navigation and water management for the region. It is one of several structures that made the Moselle navigable for larger vessels.
The barrage serves as a gathering point along the Moselradweg cycling route, where travelers stop to watch ships navigate through the locks.
The site is accessible via marked walking paths with parking available near the entrance area. Early morning or early afternoon visits offer quieter conditions for observing the locks and boats.
The power plant generates about 24 megawatts of electricity from the flowing water. A special fish ladder allows fish to move past the barrage and access their natural habitats upstream.
