Burg Longuich, Medieval castle in Longuich, Germany

Burg Longuich, also called Alte Burg, is a late Gothic burgher house at the corner of Maximinstraße and Burgstraße in Longuich. It was built as a residential castle by knight Platt von Longuich and, after being fortified in 1496 with bay windows and a walkway, received its present form in 1790 when the third storey was removed and a gabled roof added. The west wing retains the original room layout of 1496.

Burg Longuich was built by knight Platt von Longuich as a residential castle and first recorded in 1360 as a fief of the imperial abbey of St. Maximin. After it fell into disrepair in the 15th century, Platt von Longuich received permission from Archbishop and Elector Johann II of Trier in 1496 to fortify the house, fitting it with late Gothic bay windows and a walkway. In 1790 the abbey of St. Maximin, which had bought the castle, had the third storey demolished and a gabled roof added, giving it its present form.

The name Alte Burg (Old Castle) distinguishes the house from later buildings in the village. Since 1803 the east half has passed to the Mertes family, and today it houses a restaurant, while the west half, owned by the Schlöder family, holds a wine estate. In 1696 Abbot Alexander Adam von Retenich granted the house the right to press grapes, a wine-making privilege recalled by the estate now based there.

Burg Longuich stands at the corner of Maximinstraße and Burgstraße in the village centre. The east wing now houses a restaurant, while the west wing, owned by the Schlöder family, holds a wine estate; the west side keeps the original room layout of 1496 and was restored in stages from 1983.
