Windmühle Vitte, Windmill in Vitte, Hiddensee Island, Germany.
The Vitte Windmill is a hexagonal wooden structure with wooden shingles and a zinc-topped roof located in northern Vitte on Hiddensee Island. The building at Norderende 172 now serves as a residential home.
After a fire destroyed the original structure in 1907, miller Waldemar Schwartz acquired a used mill from Demmin, took it apart, and rebuilt it at this location. When the island was electrified in the late 1920s, the mill wings were removed but the mill head and shaft were kept for historical reasons.
The mill was converted into a vacation home in 1961 when architect Helmut Trauzettel and his wife Hannelore renovated it in consultation with heritage authorities. This transformation shows how a working building found new purpose while keeping its original character and memory.
The building is located in a quiet area of northern Vitte and is protected as a historic monument. Visitors should note that it is a private residence and can only be viewed from the outside.
The mill was originally moved as a complete structure from another location and reassembled here, which is quite unusual for a windmill. This practice of recycling a working building demonstrates the craftsmanship and resourcefulness of the early 1900s.
