Neues Schloss

Neues Schloss is a large palace building on Schlossplatz with three wings arranged around a horseshoe-shaped courtyard. The central section is flanked by two extending side sections that form an interconnected structure.

Construction began in 1744 under the direction of young Duke Carl Eugen and was meant to replace an older residence. Italian architect Leopoldo Retti shaped the initial design of the structure.

The palace showcases layers of architectural styles that developed over time, with sculptural details and a central dome that define its character. You can observe how these elements work together across the courtyard and facades.

The building now houses state ministries and visits require advance planning and reservation. It is advisable to confirm access beforehand to ensure you can enter when you arrive.

A notable German federal president was born in 1920 in one of the mansard apartments within the palace complex. This connection to German political history is woven into the building's past.
