Kleiner Ballsaal, Royal dance hall in Dresden Castle, Germany
The Small Ballroom is a ceremonial hall on the second floor of the Georgenbau in Dresden Castle, measuring around 120 square meters. Large windows offer views toward the Frauenkirche and allow sight lines to the surrounding city.
The room was designed between 1865 and 1868 by court architect Bernhard Krüger, a student of Gottfried Semper, as part of a royal building project under King Johann. The design emerged during a period of intensive modernization of the castle following earlier damage.
The room displays marble surfaces, gold decorations, and plasterwork with musical cherubs and floral child figures in the historicist style. This decoration reflects the taste that the royal court favored during the period of its creation.
Visits are possible daily except Tuesdays, and you can explore the spaces without rushing. Plan enough time to fully take in the decoration and window views.
The restoration of the room required an extraordinary amount of materials, including tens of thousands of gold leaves for the ceiling and gallery railings. This elaborate reconstruction demonstrates the importance placed on restoring historical original fixtures.
