Riesensaal

The Riesensaal is a large hall in Dresden Castle displaying over 350 historical weapons and armaments from centuries past. The collection spans items primarily from the medieval period through the early modern era.

The hall originally functioned as a display space within the castle, but after 1733 it was subdivided into smaller rooms. The space was eventually restored and reopened as an exhibition hall for the weapons collection.

The space displays tournament weapons that show how these competitions evolved from military training into festive aristocratic events. Visitors can see how important these contests were to court life.

The hall is part of the castle complex and can be visited during regular opening hours. It is helpful to wear sturdy shoes since exploring the castle involves considerable walking.

The hall's name comes from painted giant figures created by the Tola brothers that decorated the walls during the Renaissance. These wall paintings gave the space its distinctive name, which has endured to the present day.
