Schlosskapelle Dresden

Schlosskapelle Dresden is a Gothic chapel within Dresden Castle featuring ribbed vault ceilings and detailed stonework throughout its interior. The space is defined by slender pillars and consistent Gothic architectural elements that characterize the entire structure.

The chapel was built between 1551 and 1553 as an original Protestant prayer space within the castle. After 1737 it was transformed when the Elector converted to Catholicism and repurposed the building for Catholic worship.

The golden entrance portal displays Corinthian columns and biblical figures that blend Renaissance design with religious meaning. This visual approach shows how power and faith came together in this space.

The chapel is located at Taschenberg 2 in central Dresden and is easily accessible by public transport. It is recommended to call ahead to confirm opening hours and any special conditions for your visit.

The chapel suffered severe damage when its ground floor vault collapsed in 1966 and remained closed for many years. After extensive restoration work, it reopened to visitors in 2013.
