Neues Schloss

Neues Schloss is a Baroque palace in Bayreuth arranged around a central sun temple. Curved arcades form an oval building complex with two matching wings that originally housed an orangery and other facilities.

Construction took place between 1749 and 1753 under Margravine Wilhelmine's leadership. The palace replaced an earlier garden layout that had featured hedge mazes and other ornamental installations.

The name reflects its origins as a private retreat for the Margravine away from court life. The architectural details reveal how theater design influences shaped aristocratic taste in 18th-century German princely courts.

The grounds are best explored during mild weather when gardens and outdoor areas are fully accessible. Guided tours are available, and there is a café on site where visitors can rest between viewing the different sections.

A gilded quadriga carrying Apollo crowns the central temple dome, representing the sun's daily journey across the Brandenburg-Bayreuth lands. This golden sculpture is one of the few such elaborate roof ornaments found on German palaces from this period.
