Bayreuth, District capital in Upper Franconia, Germany.
Bayreuth is a district in Upper Franconia that reaches from the Fichtel Mountains in the northeast to the Franconian Jura in the southwest. The district encircles the independent city of Bayreuth entirely, though the city itself remains a separate administrative unit.
The current district was formed in 1972 when the two older districts of Bayreuth and Pegnitz merged. Smaller municipalities from neighboring districts joined the newly created territory.
The name comes from a small river that joins the Rotmain near the town, shaping how settlements grew along its banks over centuries. Many villages within the area keep their traditional structure, with church towers and market squares marking local centers.
The district borders nine other districts, which can complicate orientation when moving between regions. Administrative centers and municipalities are scattered across a large area with varying infrastructure.
The Veldenstein Forest represents one of Bavaria's largest continuous woodland areas and covers a considerable part of the district. This forested landscape provides habitat for numerous animal and plant species rarely found in smaller wooded areas.
