Castle of Garatshausen consists of an Old Castle and a New Castle on the west bank of Lake Starnberg. The Old Castle is a four-storey building on a nearly square plan with four corner turrets and a mansard roof. The New Castle, built to its west, is a three-winged structure with ground-floor loggias, linked to the Old Castle by an arcade running through the castle chapel.

A first depiction of the Old Castle dates from 1568; the Munich patrician Caspar Weiler probably built a short saddle-roofed house with a low defensive wall in the mid-16th century, and the corner towers are documented only after 1699. From 1565 it was the seat of an Hofmark, later passing to the barons von Schrenck, the Vieregg counts of Tutzing and the imperial counts La Rosée. Swedish troops badly damaged it in the Thirty Years' War, and in 1834 Duke Max in Bavaria bought it for the House of Wittelsbach for 145,000 gulden.

The castle chapel was built in 1759/60 by Imperial Count Basselet von La Rosée. The New Castle, linked to the Old Castle by an arcade running through the chapel, holds a mirror hall in classical Art Nouveau forms from around 1900. Empress Elisabeth of Austria stayed here with her daughter Marie Valerie in 1868 and 1869, near her parents' home at Possenhofen.

The complex stands at Franz-Eisele-Straße 1 in the Garatshausen district on the western shore of Lake Starnberg. The Old Castle belongs to the Thurn und Taxis family and is not open to the public; the New Castle, reached via an arcade through the castle chapel, now houses a Bavarian Red Cross hospital and retirement home. Visitors can view the buildings from outside and walk the adjoining castle park.

The castle stands on the west shore of Lake Starnberg, not on the Loisach. Its chapel was built in 1759/60 by Imperial Count Basselet von La Rosée, and an arcade connects the Old Castle through this chapel to the New Castle. The Old Castle remains in the possession of the Thurn und Taxis family.
