Feldafing, municipality of Germany
Feldafing is a small municipality in the Starnberg district on the eastern shore of Lake Starnberg in Bavaria. It sits between forested hills and the lake, with villas and residential houses spread through the landscape.
In the 19th century, wealthy families from Munich began building villas along the lakeshore, drawn by the natural surroundings and the short distance from the city. The arrival of the railway strengthened those ties and shaped the character of the place as it stands today.
The Rose Garden near the center is a public garden where visitors can walk among roses of many varieties during the warmer months. Golf is a long-standing leisure activity in the area, with a course that sits directly on the lakeshore.
Feldafing is on a commuter rail line from Munich, making it easy to reach without a car. Spring and summer are the most comfortable seasons for walking along the lake or through the woods.
Just off the shore of Feldafing lies Rose Island, a small island in Lake Starnberg with a garden pavilion once used by King Maximilian II as a summer retreat. The island is reachable by ferry in summer and feels like a place time has largely passed by.
