Standortübungsplatz Holzwickede-Hengsen, Military training ground in Holzwickede, Germany.
Standortübungsplatz Holzwickede-Hengsen is a military training ground located between the A1 highway and B233 road in North Rhine-Westphalia. The area contains rolling terrain with tree lines and a small lake where soldiers conduct their exercises.
The training area was established in 1935 to prepare soldiers for the Wehrmacht stationed near Dortmund. Its creation involved the forced removal of residents from the Hengsen and Opherdicke communities.
The name comes from Hengsen, the village where it is located and where locals have long known these paths. Today residents share the landscape with military activities and can access certain areas for walking and recreation.
Check in advance which areas are open to visitors, as sections may be restricted during military exercises. Use the marked trails and open grass areas when access is permitted in those zones.
The Hengser stream runs through the site and creates natural boundaries between training zones. For generations of soldiers, these waterways have served as key reference points during their exercise operations.
