Schillerbrücke Aue, Road bridge in Aue-Bad Schlema, Germany
The Schillerbrücke Aue connects Bahnhofstrasse with Schneeberger Strasse over the Zwickauer Mulde River as a road bridge, extending 138 feet (42 meters) with a width of nearly 49 feet (15 meters). Small putti figures stand along the sides, giving the three-span concrete construction a special character.
A wooden footbridge for pedestrians stood at this location from 1899 before the current concrete construction was built in 1914. The flood disaster of 2002 damaged the foundation and load-bearing structure so severely that a comprehensive renovation became necessary the following year.
The name honors Friedrich Schiller, whose birthday was commemorated in 1984 with a plaque mounted on the railing. Pedestrians and drivers cross the river daily on this route between the two streets, which find their direct continuation through this connection.
The crossing is open to both pedestrians and drivers and offers level access to the riverbank on both sides. Those walking can pass along the putti figures and have a good view of the water from the railing.
During the 2003 renovation, the original decorative elements from 1914 were carefully preserved and incorporated into the renewed construction. This allowed the structure to retain its historical appearance from over a century ago despite new foundations and steel reinforcements.
