Dunau windmill, Smock mill in Lathwehren, Lower Saxony, Germany
Dunau windmill is a smock mill with a timber tower in Lathwehren, a part of Seelze in Lower Saxony. The entire mill body rotates on a horizontal beam to position the sails facing the wind.
The mill was erected in 1852, when the region needed many grain mills for its growing population. Later modifications adapted the operation to new grinding techniques that emerged in the second half of the 19th century.
The name Dunau comes from the old waterways that once shaped the farmland around the mill site. Visitors today see the timber-frame construction with its dark wood, typical of Lower Saxon farms and still shaping the landscape.
The mill stands on the edge of Lathwehren and is accessible via small country roads that branch off from the village center. Access is usually on foot along a short field path that is easy to walk in dry weather.
The mill body rests on a massive oak beam that sits directly on a masonry foundation. This construction allows the entire structure to be turned by hand through 360 degrees when the wind direction changes.
