Eiche und Lügenstein, Natural monument in Göxe, Germany
Eiche und Lügenstein forms a natural monument in Göxe, comprising a round sandstone plate 1.5 meters across beneath a large oak tree at a road junction. The ensemble stands directly on Federal Road 65, surrounded by glacial boulders and next to a barn at the village edge.
The original glacial boulder was considered the largest in the area and was destroyed in the 19th century, then replaced by a millstone plate. The oak beside the stone now reaches 21 meters in height and has marked the spot for generations.
The name refers to an old custom where anyone sitting on the sandstone was expected to speak only the truth. Today the site recalls village traditions of oaths and assembly, when stones served as fixed places for decisions or solemn promises.
The site lies directly at the junction of two roads and is easy to reach by car or on foot. The ground around the stone is firm, so visitors can view the spot comfortably even in wet weather.
The millstone plate rests on several large glacial boulders that form a natural base. This arrangement creates a small geological puzzle at the roadside.
