Bellevue di Monaco, Cultural center in Munich, Germany
Bellevue di Monaco is a cultural center in Munich comprising three connected buildings on Müllerstrasse that house residents, a café, and a rooftop sports court with night lighting. The facility accommodates around 50 people in different living arrangements, ranging from shared spaces for young adults to separate units for families.
The site faced demolition until local residents protested in 2014, leading the City of Munich to grant a 40-year lease to a social cooperative. This decision preserved the buildings and transformed them into a hub for integration and community engagement.
The center functions as a gathering place where Munich residents and refugees come together through theater, language classes, and shared meals from different cuisines. These interactions happen naturally through daily activities where people from different backgrounds connect.
The facility is accessible during daytime and evening hours, with the rooftop open to observe daily activities. Visitors can participate in events or visit the café areas if they wish to spend time there.
The rooftop sports court sits among the highest playing fields in Munich and was created from an unused rooftop space. Today residents and visitors use this unexpected location for football, basketball, and other sports.
