Acheron, Ancient river in Epirus, Greece

Acheron is a river in Epirus in northwest Greece, running approximately 52 kilometers from Zotiko village to the Ionian Sea near Parga. Steep limestone cliffs line much of its course and form deep gorges with a shaded riverbed.

Ancient Greeks built an oracle sanctuary on its banks to contact the dead. Centuries later the river remained a site of religious rites before Christian communities shaped the region.

The name derives from ancient Greek and means "river of woe," reflecting beliefs that connected this waterway to the underworld. Today the river remains a quiet place where local fishermen cast their nets in the morning hours and hikers pause at its banks.

Three main access points at Ammoudia, Mesopotamos and Glyki lead to the water and offer opportunities for swimming. The current can vary with season and rainfall, so caution is needed.

The river disappears underground in places and forms natural tunnels through limestone formations. These subterranean sections allow the water to flow dark and cool through narrow rock passages.
