Rethymno

Rethymno is a coastal city on northern Crete featuring a working port and a historic old town core. The older areas contain narrow winding streets lined with stone buildings, arched passages, and waterfront establishments.

The city was founded by Venetians in the 16th century and later fell under Ottoman control, shaping its architectural heritage. Both periods left their mark on the buildings and layout you see today.

Local fishermen still work from the harbor, and you can see their boats and nets along the waterfront in the early morning. This working port reflects how the sea remains central to daily life and the community's connection to the coast.

The city is accessible by bus or car from regional airports and has no direct flights. Walking is the best way to explore the old town and harbor areas.

The harbor entrance was once protected by a chain that could be raised in times of danger to secure the port. Though no longer visible, this medieval defense method reveals how strategically important the location was.
