Balos Lagoon, Lagoon and beach in Kissamos Municipality, Greece
The Balos Lagoon combines white sand beaches with shallow turquoise waters, forming a natural pool between Cape Gramvousa and Cape Tigani in northwestern Crete.
The area near Balos contains remnants of a Roman settlement at Cape Korykon and a cavern that marks the location of Turkish massacres from 1825.
The Natura 2000 program protects the lagoon's ecosystem, which provides a habitat for monk seals, loggerhead turtles, and various species of seabirds.
Visitors can reach Balos through ferry services from Kissamos port, by driving on an 8-kilometer dirt road, or by taking a three-hour trek from Kaliviani.
The sand at Balos Beach displays a pink tint in certain areas due to the presence of crushed seashells mixed with the white sand.
