Hotel Grande Bretagne, Luxury hotel in Syntagma Square, Athens, Greece
Hotel Grande Bretagne is a nine-story building at the intersection of Vasileos Georgiou and Panepistimiou Streets with 320 rooms offering views of the Acropolis. The property features multiple restaurants, spa facilities, conference rooms, and personal concierge services for guests.
The building was constructed in 1842 as a mansion for businessman Antonis Dimitriou and was acquired and converted into a hotel in 1874 by Efstathios Lampsas. During World War II, the structure successively served as Greek General Headquarters, a Nazi command center, and a British forces base.
The hotel serves as a meeting place for international guests and features classical Greek artworks alongside traditional Mediterranean architectural elements throughout its spaces. The elegant design reflects a blend of international luxury and local artistic tradition.
The hotel is centrally located in Athens and within walking distance of many attractions, making it convenient for exploring the city. Visitors should note that the building sits on a busy street, though proximity to public transportation offers excellent connections throughout the area.
The hotel was for decades the place where important political guests and royal visitors were received, shaping Greek history through its halls. Many significant negotiations and meetings took place within its rooms, influencing major decisions for the nation.
