Rizinia, Archaeological site in Gortyn Municipality, Greece
Rizinia is an archaeological site situated on a flat-topped elevation called Patella tou Priniou at the eastern foothills of Mount Psiloritis in Crete. The excavations have uncovered temple ruins and building remains that show different construction phases and architectural styles.
Italian archaeologists discovered the remains between 1906 and 1908, identifying the site through an inscription bearing the name (I)ZENI(A). The findings show that this location was occupied and used across several ancient periods.
The temples here show a blend of building styles, with columns in Minoan style and limestone benches reflecting how different traditions came together. You can see how architectural choices reflected the cultural connections of this ancient community.
The site sits on an elevated plateau offering good views of the ruins spread across the area. Many artifacts including stone statues and limestone friezes are displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, so plan a visit there to see the recovered objects.
The temple of Rhea contains a rectangular room with a fire-baked floor where archaeologists found evidence of animal sacrifices. The ash and bone remains offer insight into the religious practices that took place in this room.
