Heraion of Samos, Ancient Greek sanctuary in Kolona, Greece

The Heraion of Samos is an ancient sanctuary in Kolona featuring approximately 115 colossal marble columns in Ionic style arranged across a vast religious complex near the southern coast. The ruins display remains of multiple temples and structures that developed and changed over centuries.

The sanctuary originates from the 8th century BC and underwent multiple construction phases, with its most elaborate form developing during the rule of Polycrates. The site maintained religious importance for local communities across many generations.

The sanctuary held deep meaning for Ionian worshippers, who gathered here to honor the goddess Hera with processions and ritual offerings throughout the year.

The site sits on open ground with some shaded areas, so sturdy shoes and sun protection are recommended for comfortable walking. Basic facilities are available on-site, but bringing plenty of water is wise since the location sits somewhat removed from nearby towns.

Excavations revealed a remarkable collection of terracotta offerings, ivory objects, and large stone figures left by worshippers over the centuries. These discoveries demonstrate how wealthy and influential this sanctuary was in the ancient world.
