Cape Matapan, Coastal headland in Mani Peninsula, Greece
Cape Tenaro extends into the Mediterranean Sea at the southernmost point of mainland Greece, marked by a 16-meter-tall lighthouse above sea level.
The ancient Greeks built a temple to Poseidon near the cape's cave, which they believed was an entrance to the underworld of Hades.
The ruins of the Sanctuary of Poseidon Tenarios and a first-century Roman mosaic demonstrate the historical importance of this maritime location.
Visitors need to walk 2 kilometers from the parking area in Kokkinogia village to reach the lighthouse and explore the archaeological remains.
The cape serves as the final mainland European point for migratory birds heading toward Africa across the Mediterranean Sea.
