Diros cave

Diros cave, Underground cave system in Areopoli, Greece

Diros Cave is a sprawling underground system featuring long passages and subterranean lakes in the Mani region. The interior contains limestone formations, dark water chambers, and rooms that descend far below the surface.

Local people knew of the cave entrance around 1900, but scientific exploration began in the mid-20th century. This early research unlocked the secrets of the system and eventually led to opening it for visitors.

The cave holds ancient artifacts and animal remains that tell stories of life in prehistoric times. Walking through these passages, visitors encounter evidence of the creatures and people who inhabited the region thousands of years ago.

Your visit combines a boat ride through underground lakes with a walk through lit passages on level pathways. Wear comfortable shoes and expect cool temperatures and potentially slippery surfaces.

The natural entrance is surprisingly small and sits near sea level, yet the interior plunges to depths of 71 meters below the water surface. This contrast between the modest opening and the vast underground chambers makes it a hidden wonder.
