Apidima Cave

The cave system on the steep western coastline of Mani contains multiple chambers formed through limestone erosion at an elevation of 4 meters.

Research teams discovered two human skulls dating back over 210,000 years, representing some of the earliest evidence of human presence outside Africa.

The excavation site holds significant anthropological value with findings of six to eight human skeletons from different periods of the Paleolithic era.

The cave entrance requires careful navigation due to its coastal location between the gulfs of Diros and Limenio, with guided tours available.

During the Pleistocene period, the cave stood above a small valley extending to Oitylo, which submerged when sea levels rose 10,000 years ago.
