Alepotrypa cave, Neolithic archaeological cave in Diros Bay, Greece

Alepotrypa Cave is a Neolithic archaeological site in Diros Bay that extends roughly 300 meters through multiple chambers. The passage concludes at an underground lake surrounded by limestone formations shaped over thousands of years.

The cave functioned as a settlement and burial ground between 6000 and 3200 BC. Archaeological work from 1970 to 2006 revealed the remains of at least 170 individuals and numerous everyday objects preserved within the chambers.

The name Alepotrypa means "fox hole" in Greek, reflecting the wildlife that inhabited this underground world. Visitors can still observe traces of how people used the space as both a home and a final resting place for their dead.

Guided tours take visitors through the cave system to explore geological formations and archaeological discoveries. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket, as the interior remains cool and damp year-round.

Scientists study stalagmites within the cave to reconstruct past climate changes and human activities. These natural archives provide a detailed record of environmental conditions during the Stone Age.
