Lake Kerkini

Lake Kerkini extends across 75 square kilometers, reaching depths of 35 meters and sustaining over 300 bird species throughout its waters and shorelines.

The Greek government constructed Lake Kerkini in 1932 by damming the Strymon River, with subsequent modifications in 1980 to address silt accumulation issues.

Local residents maintain traditional fishing methods on the lake while restaurants near the shores prepare regional dishes using fresh fish and buffalo meat.

Visitors can reach Lake Kerkini through paved roads from Thessaloniki, with multiple guesthouses and hotels available in villages around the water body.

The lake supports 1,300 plant species and 4,300 insect varieties, making it one of Greece's most biologically diverse protected wetland environments.
