Kongur

Kongur is a mountain summit in the Belasitsa range situated along the border between Bulgaria and Greece. Several hiking routes approach the peak, with a cabin positioned on the mountainside to serve as a base for the final stretch of the climb.

The mountain served as a border area during the 20th century, with a surveillance post established on the summit. Remnants of this frontier installation remain visible on the peak today.

The cabin at the summit has shifted from its role as a border checkpoint to becoming a gathering space for local hikers and mountaineers. It reflects how remote frontier locations can transform into community meeting points over time.

The peak can be reached from the town of Petrich or from mountain huts on the approach routes, with varying climb durations depending on your starting point. Proper hiking boots and adequate water supply are essential, especially if beginning from lower elevations.

From this peak you can look across two countries and stand literally at the boundary line, creating an unusual sense of proximity between two nations. This geographic position makes it a distinctive place to contemplate borders and divisions.
