Leibethra

Leibethra is an archaeological site near Kanalia village at the base of Mount Olympus with remains of fortifications, burial grounds, and buildings scattered across the landscape. The excavated ruins reveal the layouts of ancient structures and evidence of different periods of settlement.

Settlement began in the 8th century BC, though burial grounds from the Late Bronze Age show people used the land even earlier. The community remained active for centuries before fading away in the 1st century BC.

The place connects to the Orpheus legend and the Leibethrician Muses through old stories passed down in the region, linking the landscape to ancient beliefs about music and poetry.

The site covers a large area, so wear comfortable shoes and plan time to walk around. Educational displays and pathways help you navigate and understand what you are seeing on the ground.

Silver coins from Macedonia and lead weights marked with the settlement's name reveal trade and economic life in the ancient community. Storage pottery shards scattered around tell stories of daily food preparation and preservation methods.
