Livadeia

Livadeia is a town in Boeotia positioned on two hills at the base of Mount Helikon, where the Herkyna river carves a deep gorge through the landscape. The terrain between the surrounding mountains shapes how the town is laid out and connected.

The Oracle of Trophonios was founded in the 6th century BC and became one of the most important sanctuaries of the ancient world. Prominent figures like Croesus and Mardonios visited this site to consult the oracle and seek divine guidance.

The town was an ancient spiritual center where visitors came to seek answers through sacred rituals at a renowned oracle site. Pilgrims underwent religious ceremonies as a way to connect with the sanctuary and receive guidance for their lives.

The town is located northwest of Athens in a mountain valley and can be reached from several directions. The best time to explore is during the cooler months when walking through the gorge and surrounding areas is more comfortable.

Underground structures connected to the ancient oracle are hidden beneath the town and continue to be partially explored today. These hidden chambers reveal how the ancients incorporated people into their spiritual practices and beliefs.
