Igoumenitsa, Port city in Epirus, Greece
Igoumenitsa is a port town along the eastern shore of its namesake gulf in the Ionian Sea, stretching across a 7-kilometer Drepanos Beach. The port has two sections that serve ferry routes to Italy and the Ionian Islands.
The settlement grew from an ancient site called Gitanae into a strategic port and received its current name in 1938. It was known as Grava during Ottoman times.
The Archaeological Museum displays objects from the Thesprotia region, documenting layers of time from ancient through Byzantine periods in its collection. The exhibitions offer insight into the long settlement history of this coastal area.
The A2 motorway connects the town to Thessaloniki and Turkey, providing good road access for travelers passing through. Those arriving by sea will find ferry services operating regularly to multiple destinations.
The town maintains active partnerships with municipalities abroad, including formal relationships with Saranda in Albania and Velbert in Germany. These connections reflect its role as a hub linking different countries and cultures.
