Passaron, Archaeological site in Mega Gardiki, Greece.
Passaron is an ancient city near Mega Gardiki in the Epirus region, with ruins spread across mountainous terrain marked by gorges and forested slopes. Excavations have uncovered foundation walls of houses, temples, and public buildings that reveal the layout of a classical ancient settlement.
The city was founded by the Molossians and served as their political and religious center from about the 8th century BC until the 4th century AD. The site lost importance after the collapse of tribal society and was eventually abandoned.
The remains show how the Molossians organized their settlement with squares and buildings reflecting daily life in an ancient tribal society. Walking through the ruins reveals how this place served as a center of regional authority.
The terrain is mountainous and partly difficult to access, so visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow plenty of time to explore. There are few marked trails, so it helps to research the location and access points beforehand.
The settlement was not organized according to the democratic principles of classical city-states, but followed a tribal structure under a monarch. This distinction makes Passaron valuable for understanding alternative models of ancient Greek society.
