Pellene, Archaeological site in Xylokastro-Evrostina Municipality, Greece.

Pellene is an ancient city spread across a ridge, with defensive walls dividing it into a larger western section and a smaller eastern portion. The remains show multiple temples, housing foundations, and fortifications that reveal how the settlement was structured and protected.

The city was founded in ancient times and played an important role during the Peloponnesian War, when it became the first Achaean settlement to support Sparta. This early decision shaped the city's path in the years that followed.

The Theoxenia competitions held here awarded locally made cloaks as prizes, showing how the city gained prestige through hosting sacred games. Visitors walking the site can still sense where crowds gathered for these special events.

The site sits on a ridge with uneven terrain, so wearing proper footwear and allowing time to explore the scattered remains is important. It helps to keep the layout in mind as you walk around to understand how the different areas connect.

The Temple of Athena once housed a gold and ivory statue crafted by the master sculptor Pheidias. This precious work made the site one of the most important religious centers in the region.
