Heraion of Perachora, Ancient Greek sanctuary near Limni Vouliagmenis, Greece

The Heraion of Perachora is an ancient sanctuary on a peninsula featuring a temple with associated structures built around it. The complex includes an L-shaped portico, communal dining halls, and a large water storage tank that served the site.

This sanctuary was founded in the 6th century BCE as a religious center dedicated to Hera. Over time, new structures were added and older ones were modified as religious practices and the community's needs evolved.

This sanctuary was dedicated to the goddess Hera and drew pilgrims who came to make offerings and participate in religious rituals. The votive gifts left behind by visitors reveal who prayed here and what they hoped to receive.

The site is located at the end of a peninsula and requires a walk through the landscape to reach it. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring water, as the area offers little shade or shelter.

The site was equipped with multiple springs and cisterns, making it a rare example of water-conscious design in the ancient world. These water systems reveal how essential fresh water was for ritual purification and everyday life at the sanctuary.
