Maison délienne

Maison Délienne is an ancient residential structure on the island of Delos built across multiple levels on sloping ground. The building contains interior courtyards with rooms of different sizes, along with cisterns and drainage channels that managed water flow throughout the spaces.

The residence dates from the Hellenistic period when Delos grew under Athenian control after 166 BCE as a major trade port. The island's expansion during this era led to the construction of many prosperous homes such as this one.

The house displays features of wealthy living through mosaic floors and marble columns in its rooms. These decorations reflect how prosperous families adorned their homes and displayed their place in society.

The site sits on uneven ground, so the different levels and stairs require careful attention when walking through. Comfortable footwear is recommended, and it helps to allow time for exploring the various rooms and courtyards.

The house was built using different stone types including gneiss, granite, marble, and porous stone that were available on the island. This mix shows how ancient builders used local resources and adapted their techniques to the available materials.
