Temple of the Delians, Ancient Greek temple in Delos, Greece.
The Temple of the Delians is an ancient Greek ruin on the island of Delos built from white marble. The structure rests on a rectangular base with columns arranged around the outer edges to support the roof.
Construction began around 476 BC but work stopped when the island lost its political importance and funding dried up. Builders returned to continue the project centuries later, yet never managed to finish it completely.
The temple served as a place where people left offerings to ask Apollo for blessings and protection. Visitors can still sense how central this site was to the community, as the remains show how people once gathered here to worship together.
The ruin sits on an island and can only be reached by boat, so plan to take a ferry from nearby islands. Wear sturdy shoes because the ground is uneven and there is little shade from the sun anywhere on the site.
The columns display unfinished grooves, proof that workers could not complete the temple entirely. These details reveal how ancient Greek builders actually shaped their stone structures during the construction process.
