Kahal Shalom Synagogue, Jewish synagogue in La Juderia quarter, Rhodes, Greece
Kahal Shalom Synagogue is a house of prayer in the La Juderia quarter of Rhodes and features black and white mosaic stone patterns on its floors with a central tevah oriented southeast toward Jerusalem. The interior spans two levels, with an upper gallery providing seating and the arrangement of the space reflecting the flow of worship.
The building was constructed in 1577 and stands as the oldest synagogue in Greece and the only Jewish place of worship still in use on Rhodes. The structure survived conflicts and upheaval to remain an active center for the community.
The synagogue follows Sephardic traditions with its central bimah and dual Torah arks, reflecting the heritage of Jews who came from Spain. Visitors can see how the space was designed to support the daily practices of this long-standing community.
The synagogue opens for Friday night prayer services, religious holidays, and special occasions, and visitors should plan to come during service times to experience the community gathered in prayer. Access is straightforward and the site is easy to explore on foot.
The building received a women's balcony in the 1930s that replaced earlier side rooms and offered views through the south wall. This addition shows how the community adapted the space to new needs while maintaining its spiritual purpose.
