Itomi, Archaeological site near Mount Ithome, Greece

Itomi is an archaeological site containing remains of ancient structures scattered across an elevated location in Messenia. Visitors find temple ruins, fortification walls, and sanctuary foundations that span multiple periods of Greek architectural traditions.

The site served as the acropolis of ancient Messene until the Thebans established a new city after defeating Sparta in the 4th century BC. This marked the end of its role as the main political and military stronghold of the region.

The sanctuary dedicated to Zeus Ithomatas drew pilgrims from across the region seeking divine favor through worship and offerings. This spiritual function shaped how locals understood the site's religious importance in their daily lives.

The site covers a large area, so visitors should plan for a longer walk and wear sturdy footwear suited to uneven terrain. Wind exposure at the elevated location means bringing adequate clothing for changing weather conditions is advisable.

The elevated position made this location a critical stronghold during conflicts between Messenia and Sparta, giving it major strategic value throughout antiquity. Archaeological evidence of defensive construction and military occupation remains visible in the layout of walls and fortifications.
