Messene, Archaeological site in Messene, Greece
Messene is an ancient Greek city surrounded by defensive walls extending about 9 kilometers around Mount Ithome and pierced by two major gates. The site contains a theater, stadium, gymnasium, and several sanctuaries along with public buildings spread across the landscape.
The city was founded in 370 BCE after a military leader defeated the Spartans at Leuctra and liberated the oppressed Messenians. This founding marked the beginning of an independent city after centuries under Spartan rule.
The theater served as a gathering place where citizens came together for debates and performances. This role shows how central such public spaces were to community life.
The site is spread out, so wear comfortable shoes and allow time for thorough exploration. Informational signs in multiple languages help guide you through the different areas and explain what you see.
The site preserves the complete urban layout of an ancient Greek city that the ancient traveler Pausanias documented in detail. This nearly intact picture allows visitors to visualize what an entire ancient city looked like.
