Corfu Old Fortress, Venetian fortress in Corfu, Greece
The fortress occupies a rocky peninsula on the eastern side of Corfu town, separated from the mainland by a wide artificial moat called Contrafossa.
Construction began in 1545 under Venetian rule, replacing earlier Byzantine fortifications and successfully repelling three major Ottoman sieges in 1537, 1571, and 1716.
The Church of Saint George within the fortress follows ancient Doric temple architecture and contains significant religious art from various historical periods.
Visitors reach the fortress by crossing a 60-meter iron bridge that replaced the original drawbridge, with multiple levels connected by stone staircases.
The fortress houses the Public Library of Corfu in former British barracks and maintains an archive containing over 600 years of historical documents.
