Aphidna, Ancient fortified settlement in East Attica, Greece.
The archaeological site of Aphidna spans across the Kotroni hill, featuring Classical fortifications and two streams, the Charadra and Varnavas.
Archaeological excavations in 1894 revealed 13 Middle Bronze Age tombs containing precious artifacts, including bronze rings, silver vessels, and ceramic items.
The settlement played a role in Greek mythology as the location where Theseus concealed Helen before the Dioscuri invaded Attica to rescue her.
The site extends over 34 square kilometers in the eastern foothills of Parnitha mountains, located 27 kilometers north of Athens city center.
The excavated tumulus measured 24 meters in diameter and contained three types of burials: shaft graves, pithos burials, and cist graves.
