Soros, Ancient burial mound in Marathon, Greece

Soros is an ancient burial mound in Marathon containing the cremated remains of around 192 Athenian soldiers within its earthen structure, rising roughly 12 meters high with a diameter of about 50 meters. The monument was constructed as a permanent burial ground following a major military engagement.

The burial ground was established after the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC to honor Athenian warriors who fell defending their land against Persian invaders. This conflict marked a turning point in ancient Greek history.

This burial mound served as a ceremonial gathering place where young Athenians came regularly to honor the fallen soldiers with wreaths and ritual offerings. The site kept their memory alive through repeated acts of remembrance.

The site sits along the main road connecting Marathon and Athens, making it straightforward to locate by car. Information panels on-site explain the historical context and what you are looking at.

Excavations in 1890 by Valerios Stais revealed substantial deposits of cremated remains and artifacts from ancient funeral ceremonies beneath the mound. These discoveries showed exactly how the Athenians conducted their memorial rites.
